How do you multiply?

Multiplication is the process of adding a particular number to itself several times.

There are several ways to write multiplication problems.

 

 

Multiply 5 and 7

5 times 7

The product of 5 and 7

5 x 7

Multiplication problems can be set out either:

 

  1. Horizontally  eg  5 x 7 = 35   or   230 x 20 = 4,600

  2. Vertically  eg   Vertical sum. 5 times 7 = 35   or   Vertical sum. 235 times 20 equals 4,700
