What is Pi?

When you divide the diameter of any circle into the circumference (perimeter) of that same circle the answer you get will always be the same.

The answer will always be 3.14159. This is what you call Pi (pi) . Pi could also be called a ratio, which is always true for every circle.

Pi  =  circumference
            diameter

You can test this yourself. Using your compass, draw a circle with a radius of 5 centimetres. Now cut yourself a length of string 10 centimetres long (this is the length of the diameter of your circle). See how many times the length of string fits over the circumference of the circle. It should fit three times with a small gap left over.

Try this activity with other circles of different sizes.

What is Pi?

Pi is a constant and is represented by this symbol, pi symbol.

pi symbol is the number you get when you divide the circumference of a circle (C) which is shown in orange, by the diameter (d).

pi symbol = C = 3.14159
        d

Diameter of circle

pi symbol is called a constant because the number for pi symbol is always the same. No matter what size the circle.

pi symbol = C = 3.14159
        d
