How do you calculate the area of a shape?

Area is the number of square units it takes to cover a flat surface. Units are written as mm2 (square millimetres), m2 (square metres), in2 (square inches), or ft2 (square feet).

Area of a rectangle or parallelogram is A = l x b

Area of rectangle

Area of square     Area of a square is A = s 2

Area of triangle     Area of a triangle is Area of rectangle

Area of circle     Area of a circle is Area of square

(In engineering you tend to work with diameter (d), but sometimes you may have to use the radius (r) of a circle in which case the formula for area is A= pi r2)

Area of cube     Surface area of a cube is A = 6s2

Area of sphere     Surface area of a sphere is A = 4 pi r2 or A = pi d 2
