Abbreviations: Abbreviations are a shortened word or phrase.

 



Accumulating error: An accumulating error is when tolerance errors of different features have been added together. A tolerance error is the difference between the dimension on the engineering drawing and the measurement of the manufactured component.

 



Add: Combine two or more numbers together to make a total.

 



Addition: Addition is a particular type of calculation in which two or more numbers are added together to make a total.

 



Adjacent side: This adjacent side in a right angled triangle is the side next to a given angle which is not the hypotenuse.

 



Adjustment stroke control: This describes the depth of the blade adjustment on a press brake. With some press brakes the adjustment controls the bed which can lift up or down.

 



Air bending: Air bending describes the three point contact between the blade and the vee block in a press brake.

 



Aligned: When dimension is recorded it can be written vertically so it can be read from the right hand side or the bottom of the drawing. This is what is meant by aligned.

Another way to record dimension is unidirectionally.

 



Allowance for green: When using standard pyramid rolls, if the ends are not preset, the distance from the centre of the bottom roll to the centre of the top roll will not be curved - it will remain flat. Therefore this distance (A) has to be added to the pre-determined mean circumference, to produce a properly formed cylinder. The extra material (the flat part) is called 'green'.

 



Alloy: An alloy is made up of two or more metals (sometimes a metal and a non metal). An example is stainless steel which can be a combination of steel and chromium, nickel, molybdenum, titanium, or niobium.

 



Amendments: Amendments are notes about changes or alterations to an engineering drawing.

 



Angular: Angular describes something which has angles in it.

 



Angular measurement: Angular measurement is the relationship between two surfaces that are not parallel. Angular measurement uses degrees as the standard of measure.

 



Apex: The apex is highest point of a shape. It is usually the pointed end of an object, ie the tip.

 



Apex height: The apex height is the distance from the pointed end of a cone to the centre of the horizontal base.

 



Apex point: The apex point is the tip of any given conical shape.

 



Arc welding: Arc welding is a welding process in which a continuous and consumable wire electrode and a shielding gas are fed through a welding gun.

 



Area: In mathematics, an area is a distinct part or section of a surface.

 



AS 1100 drawing equipment: AS1100, drawing equipment is equipment that conforms to the Australian Standard.

 



AS 1100.101-1992: This Australian standard defines the general principles for technical drawing and shows tables of symbols and abbreviations and their meanings.

 



AS 1100.201-1992: This Australian standard is for mechanical engineering drawing and includes information for surface texture, welding, centre holes, pipelines,springs, gears, splines, seals and knurling.

AS/NZS 1100.501: 2002: This Australian standard is for structural engineering drawing. It looks at general applications like dimensioning, lines, symbols, abbreviations, structural elements, scales, cross referencing and arrangement of elements as well as specific applications for structural steel.

 



Assembly drawing: Assembly drawings give us a big picture view of the completed project. It shows how the components you may need to build fit together. These drawings include information about overall dimensions and the general arrangement of components. It is sometimes referred to as a general assembly drawing.

Auxiliary view: A view projected on a plane which is parallel to the surface of the principal view.
